Beginning in Lima

Hola mis amigos,

For those who do not know, I am embarking on a year-long journey with a company called Remote Year. I will be traveling the world with a group of 12, experiencing five different continents, 12 countries, working all the while. Remote Year handles everything logistically for us, including apartments, remote workspaces, flights, and even cool trips in each of the places. For example, in Lima this weekend, we are going to the small desert oasis town of Huacachina.

I am now about a week and a half into my time here in Lima, and unfortunately, there are not any lima beans :/ But other than that it has been amazing. I am in the neighborhood of Miraflores, which is really nice. So many cafes, restaurants, and other fun things to do and explore.

There is a more historical neighborhood very close called Barranco that I am very excited to check out and will be in tomorrow!

So far, the things that have stood out most to me are:

  • the vibrancy and energy of the city
  • how cheap everything is here. I would say a cup of coffee is generally around 7–8 sol ($1.50 USD) and most meals you get for lunch are between 4 and 8 dollars, where if you want to eat a nice dinner out, I feel like the max you could spend is $30–40 if you really go all out. Beers are cheap too so im obviously housing those.

Other food stuff:

tacu tacu (basically a rice and beans dish with some sort of meat, but the outside of the rice and beans is nice and crispy) 😋

  • Lomo a la parilla — not sure exactly what this means but I had some steak with some pesto risotto and it was phenomenal
  • Ceviche — Fish brined in citrus. Bad etiquette to serve it after 4 pm cuz you know it is not as fresh then.
  • arroz con mariscos — one of my favorite things, it is just rice with shellfish
  • Pan con chicharron (Pork sandwiches) are super popular here and are dank.

Pictures and video at the bottom! Jk I cannot upload a video here. 😢

Upcoming noteworthy plans:

  • Cusco for New Years (Hopefully get to Macchu Pichu at least one day)
  • Bike tour around Miraflores tomorrow and going to some underground club for a night out 💃
  • more food
  • I think we are all going to try to do some cool Christmasy stuff together as well as some volunteering on Christmas Day

Until next time yo!

PS I know this sucks. I promise I will get better at writing these. Here are some food pics. Let me know in the comments here what you liked about this and what you didn’t like. If you want more day-to-day activities, more description of the city, or whatever you think you would find interesting!
